Universal Expansion Joint
A universal expansion joint is a type of metallic expansion joint that is designed to absorb large axial, lateral, and angular movements in a piping system by using two bellows connected by a central pipe or spool.
Structure
Two bellows Placed at each end, allowing greater flexibility.
Central pipe/spool Connects the two bellows and helps maintain the distance between them.
Tie rods (optional) Used to restrain pressure thrust if needed, converting it into a universal tied expansion joint.
Purpose
* Absorbs large lateral displacements compared to single-bellows joints.
* Can also take axial compression/extension and angular movement simultaneously.
* Ideal where space is limited but movement absorption is high.
Applications
* Power plants
* Cement plants
* Oil refineries
* Chemical plants
* HVAC ducting
* Piping systems with multiple directional changes
Advantages
* Handles larger lateral movement than single bellows.
* Can absorb combined movements (axial + lateral + angular).
* Can be designed with or without tie rods, depending on pressure thrust handling.
Example Design Types
1. Universal Untied Expansion Joint free to move but transmits pressure thrust to the piping.
2. Universal Tied Expansion Joint tie rods absorb the pressure thrust, protecting anchors and guides.
